Mallolwch says
The name ‘Rhiannon’ is that of a beautiful lady who is a character in the First and Third Branches of the Mabinogi legends. The legends called ‘The Four Branches of the Mabinogi’ had their origin in the west of Ireland, and in the last quarter of the 12th century were taken in manuscript form by marauding Welsh Normans from a known medieval abbey sited in a huge circular pre-historic fortress in Connacht. The Welsh poem ‘Preiddeu Annwn’ is based on the abbey raid.
Though heavily redacted and translated to Middle Welsh by a listening scribe, these legends still retain many strange names which are in fact two or more Irish words written phonetically and fused together as a single Middle Welsh word– e.g. Arawn, Annwfyn, Mabinogi, Rhiannon, etc. [Note: Most current place-names in Ireland are gaelic words fused by dominating English suppressers.]
‘Rhiannon’ is the fusion of the two gaelic words ‘ríoghan án’ – written phonetically in Middle Welsh. ‘Ríoghan’ (pr: ree-on) means ‘fair lady’ or ‘noble lady’. The Irish word ‘án’ (pr: awn) means ‘comely’, ‘pleasant’, ‘beautiful’. Whence ‘Rhiannon’ means ‘Beautiful noble lady’.
